Getting likes (or fans) on Facebook is not generally something you do on Facebook itself… Let’s face it, it’s a pain sorting through people and friending them and hoping they’ll like what you’re doing. However, twitter, google and the good old real world can be awesome ways to get likes on facebook.
You can automate twitter to go after people who like something similar to what you create. Tweetadder is the best tool I found for doing this. So for a simple, real-world example, I got 130 likes for my page http://whoyacallinpigs.org/ over a few weeks solely using this technique. I contacted followers of compassion in world farming and a bunch of them liked my page. (when I have time to dedicate to it I’m going to take it to the next stage using other techniques…)
You can target the titles and content of your articles so people will find you on google. The theory is, if a load of people are looking for the answer to a question but not many people are providing that answer, then you can write an answer and get found! I’ve described it in detail in this article about how to get to number one in google if you’re interested. I get about 1200 hits a month effortlessly for my site http://thefreemusician.com from this technique. I only put the facebook like button on there a few weeks ago so there aren’t that many people on the page yet – but clearly if 1200 people are coming to your site every month and they like what you’re doing then you’re gonna get likes!
3) Put your like button somewhere obvious! That’s all I need to say really…
4) Joint Ventures – yep it’s official, if you work with someone else then you get access to their followers too. Again, it’s a simple one.
5) Connect with people in the real world! Yes, it’s true, if you speak to real people ‘in the flesh’ they usually get interested in what you do and visit you on facebook and generally they are FAR more likely to press ‘like’ than someone who just found you anonymously online.
